Jose Mourinho has revealed that injured striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic will join Manchester United skipper Wayne Rooney in lifting the Europa League trophy should they win the competition.
The towering Swedish forward picked up a cruciate ligament injury against United’s quarter-final opponents Anderlecht, and faces a prolonged spell on the sidelines following surgery this week.
United’s players were roundly mocked for wearing the names of both Ibrahimovic and fellow injured team-mate Marcos Rojo during the warm up prior to their league clash with Burnley.
And the lampooning could continue should Ibrahimovic take to the pitch in Stockholm, echoing the full kit celebrations John Terry was ridiculed for when he donned his Chelsea colours – shin pads and all – to lift both the Champions League and Europa League trophies in 2012 and 2013.
“I hope we get to the final. I hope he can go to his stadium,” Mourinho told beIN Sports when asked about Ibrahimovic. “I hope he can go with the captain and get the cup.”
Before Ibrahimovic can even begin thinking about joining his team-mates at the Friends Arena, however, United will first need to overcome Spanish side Celta Vigo, with the semi-final first leg kicking off on Thursday night.
