According to Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ife, the Igbo people may be traced all the way back to the city of Ile-Ife.
Ooni revealed that the Igbo people emigrated from Ile-Ife, based on historical records.
He urged historians not to rely on biassed accounts of Yoruba history but to instead compile accurate records.

On the eve of an international conference titled “Ile-Ife and Yoruba Civilization: Nexus between Tradition and Modernity,” the king gave a speech to the press at his palace in Ife.
The Igbo race, we believe, originated in and around the city of Ile-Ife.
A place called Ile-Igbo, which has been around for decades rather than being a new addition, may be found within the palace. This is only one of many reasons why I think we need a comprehensive archive of our past.
He argued that it was important to “write our history properly and put things right for the coming generations” by including the government in the initiative.
