Watford captain Troy Deeney is adamant his strike partner Odion Ighalo is going nowhere — following a report that the Nigerian said his dream was to join Manchester United.
Deeney believes Ighalo will stay at Vicarage Road and is convinced Watford’s manager, Quique Sanchez Flores, and owners, the Pozzo family, would not allow Ighalo to be sold in this window.
A report quoted Ighalo, who scored more goals than any other player in England’s top-four divisions in 2015, as saying “playing at Old Trafford has always been a dream.”
Deeney said that Ighalo, a boyhood United fan, was talking hypothetically when discussing a move to United.
“I think his comments [about United] were taken out of context a little bit,” Deeney said.
“He isn’t going to leave in January. The manager and the owner have made that clear — I have just seen him on the school run and he is in no rush to go anywhere any time soon.”
Ighalo has scored 14 Premier League goals this season, a total bettered only by Everton’s Romelu Lukaku and Leicester’s Jamie Vardy.
In contrast, United’s top scorer, Anthony Martial, has only five league goals as Louis van Gaal’s team have struggled to find the net.
