The Imo State chapter of the Action Peoples’ Party (APP) has raised the alarm over the alleged invasion of its secretariat in Owerri by suspected political thugs in the early hours of Sunday.
The party described the incident as a serious threat to democracy, the rule of law and peaceful political participation in Imo State.
In a statement issued by its State Publicity Secretary, Steve Nnamdi, the APP said the incident occurred at about 6:10 a.m. when a group of heavily armed individuals allegedly scaled the perimeter fence of the secretariat and forcefully gained access to the premises.
The party said it had received eyewitness reports alleging that the group was led by an aide to Governor Hope Uzodimma alongside some associates.
According to the APP, the suspects allegedly vandalised party property, including a billboard and other campaign materials mounted within the secretariat premises.
“The Action Peoples’ Party views this alleged act as a disturbing development capable of undermining the peaceful political atmosphere currently existing in the state,” the statement read.
The party expressed concern over what it described as a pattern of politically motivated intimidation, citing similar incidents reportedly recorded in Umuoyima, Owerri Municipal Council Area, and Arondizuogu in Ideato North Local Government Area.
The APP called on the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) to immediately launch a thorough, impartial and transparent investigation into the allegations.
It insisted that anyone found culpable, regardless of status or political affiliation, should be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
“Every registered political party has the constitutional right to conduct its lawful activities without fear, intimidation, harassment or unlawful interference,” the party stated.
The APP also appealed to Governor Uzodimma and security agencies to intervene urgently by calling political actors and government officials to order.
“It is imperative that every political party is provided with a level playing field to freely engage in legitimate political activities as preparations for future elections continue across the state,” the statement added.
The party urged its members, supporters and the public to remain calm, law-abiding and avoid any form of retaliation while allowing security agencies to carry out their constitutional duties.
