The leader of the Labour Party (LP) in Imo State, Senator Athan Achonu, has refuted claims that the party’s state chairman, Callistus Ihejiagwa, has been removed from his position following a stakeholders’ meeting.
Achonu clarified that no congress has been held in Imo State, and therefore, Ihejiagwa remains the duly recognized chairman of the Labour Party in the state.
In a statement signed by the Director General of the Senator Athan Achonu Campaign Organisation, Chime Nzeribe, the senator addressed what he called “unnecessary speculations” that followed the stakeholders’ meeting in Umuahia, Abia State.
Achonu emphasized that the party remains united and focused on strengthening its structure.
“It has come to our attention that certain individuals are falsely claiming that Callistus Ihejiagwa has ceased to hold his position as chairman following the meeting. We categorically state that these claims are unfounded.
At no point during the stakeholders’ meeting, which Senator Achonu personally attended, was there any discussion regarding changes to the State Executive,” the statement read.
Achonu reiterated that no congress has been convened in Imo State, and until such an event takes place, Ihejiagwa continues to hold his position as state chairman.
He further called for unity within the party, stressing that ongoing legal challenges faced by the National Chairman, Julius Abure, should not distract from the party’s goal of strengthening its ranks. He urged the party members to focus on collaboration and peaceful resolutions of internal disputes.
“As a key stakeholder, Barrister Abure must work with the Labour Party to ensure we emerge stronger and more united. No individual, including Barrister Abure, is greater than the Labour Party.
Unity is essential, and our focus is on building an indomitable force capable of transforming both our state and nation,” Achonu stated.
He warned that efforts to destabilize the party would not succeed, urging members to remain committed to supporting Ihejiagwa’s leadership until any changes are made through proper democratic processes.
Senator Achonu also underscored the importance of unity in overcoming challenges, both internal and external, adding that the party must find a way to work together to ensure the future of Nigeria under Labour Party leadership.
“Under Senator Achonu’s leadership, we will not allow the enemies of the Labour Party to prevail. Any attempts to destabilize our ranks will not succeed.
We call on all members of the Labour Party in Imo State to remain resolute and committed to supporting the leadership of Callistus Ihejiagwa until a congress is held,” the statement concluded.
