The governorship elections in the states of Edo and Ondo have been scheduled for 2024 by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Edo State’s gubernatorial election is scheduled for September 21, 2024, and Ondo State’s is scheduled for the following Saturday, November 16, 2024.
Edo and Ondo’s present governors’ terms will end on November 11th, 2024 and February 23rd, 2025, respectively, according to a statement released by INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun on Tuesday.

According to the Constitution’s Section 178 (2), the Commission stated that elections for the aforementioned positions must take place at least 150 days and no more than 30 days before the current holders’ terms end.
Olumekun stated, “The latest date for Election to the office of Governor, Edo State, is 12th October 2024, while that of Ondo State is 24th January 2025. Similarly, the Commission must issue Notice for the Election no later than 360 days before the election date in accordance with Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022.
On September 21, 2024, elections for governor will take place.
The Edo State governorship elections schedule calls for party primaries to be held between February 1st and 24th, 2024, and the submission of the list of nominated candidates via the online portal to begin at 9:00am on March 4th and end at 6:00pm on March 24th.
Election day is Tuesday, September 19, 2024, and the Commission has announced that the final list of candidates will be published on April 23. Public campaigning by political parties will begin on April 24 and conclude on September 18.
He announced that the party primaries in Ondo State will take place between April 6 and 27, 2024, and that the deadline for submitting the names of nominees through the internet portal would be May 20 at 6 p.m.
According to the national commissioner, the final candidate list will be released on June 18th, 2024, and public campaigning by political parties will begin on June 19th and stop on November 14th, 2024, 24 hours before the election.
The Commission said that it has made available on its website and social media platforms a comprehensive itinerary and Schedule of Activities for the two elections.
The Commission urged all political groups and candidates to carefully follow the schedule of events.
