INEC Prepares for Rerun Elections in Anambra Federal Constituencies

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced its readiness for the upcoming rerun elections in Nnewi North/Nnewi South/Ekwusigo and Orumba North and Orumba South federal constituencies in Anambra State.

Dr. Elizabeth Agwu, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Anambra State, disclosed this during a media briefing held at the INEC headquarters in Awka on Wednesday.

Agwu explained that the decision to conduct the rerun election was in compliance with a court order mandating the cancellation of the initial election held in 21 polling units across the two federal constituencies.

The rerun election is scheduled to take place in five polling units across four wards in Nnewi North, as well as 16 polling units and one ward in Orumba North.

Speaking on the commission’s preparedness, Agwu assured that INEC in Anambra State had made adequate arrangements to ensure that the rerun election is conducted in a credible, free, and fair manner.

She emphasized that no candidate had been declared winner in the federal constituencies until after the rerun elections, urging the electorate to participate actively in the electoral process.

Agwu called on the 97,438 registered voters in the affected local government areas (LGAs) to turn out in large numbers to exercise their franchise.

Furthermore, she urged the 161,914 registered voters in Orumba North and South to participate in the rerun elections scheduled for February 3 and cast their votes for their preferred candidates.

In assuring the safety and security of voters, Agwu stated that measures had been put in place to ensure tight security before, during, and after the elections.

She reiterated that INEC had been collaborating with security agencies to provide adequate security for voters during the electoral process.
