The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that all registered political parties are eligible to participate in the upcoming rerun elections in Plateau Northern Senatorial Zone of Plateau State.
The Commission also revealed plans to recruit and deploy over 11,000 ad-hoc personnel for the exercise.
Dr. Oliver Agundu, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in the State, made this known while briefing journalists in Jos, the State Capital, regarding the upcoming rerun election in Plateau Northern Senatorial zone of the state.
Agundu stated, “The purpose of this meeting is to officially inform all of you about the Court-Offered Rerun Senatorial Election in Plateau North and the Federal House of Representative Election in Jos North/Bassa Federal Constituency.
To invite you all to once again inform the public about the election and the imperative of their active participation and orderly conduct so that we can have a peaceful election come 3rd of February, 2024.”
He clarified that the rerun election was not due to any failure on the part of INEC in the initial election but was a result of a party’s failure to comply with a court order and lack of structure at the time of the election.
He also highlighted the involvement of the highest court in the country in the matter.
The upcoming election is set to be conducted in six Local Government Areas of Plateau North, namely; Barkin Ladi, Bassa, Jos East, Jos North, Jos South, and Riyom, with a total of 73 Registration Areas (RAs) and 2,266 Polling Units (PUs).
The constituency has a total of 1,234,761 registered voters, out of which 1,167,001 have collected their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
Additionally, the Jos North/Bassa Federal Constituency, which falls within the Plateau North Senatorial District, comprises Jos North and Bassa Local Government Areas, with 30 Registration Areas (RAs) and 1,209 Polling Units (PUs).
The total registered voters in this constituency are 647,409, with 614,956 PVCs collected.
The Commissioner emphasized the magnitude of the task at hand and called for collective efforts to ensure fair reportage and timely information dissemination to the public.
He also highlighted the expected recruitment and deployment of over 11,000 ad-hoc personnel, in addition to security personnel, for the smooth conduct of the elections.
