The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has complied with a court order recognizing the Julius Abure-led leadership of the Labour Party (LP).
In a letter addressed to Julius Abure and Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, the Commission’s Secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony, invited the Labour Party to participate in the fourth consultative meeting with political parties.
This development follows a Federal High Court ruling in Abuja, which declared the Labour Party’s national convention held in March 2024 in Nnewi as valid and constitutional.

The judgment, delivered by Justice Emeka Nwite, also directed INEC to accord full recognition and privileges to the party’s National Working Committee under Barrister Abure’s leadership.
Speaking to journalists after attending the INEC consultative meeting on Thursday, Labour Party National Secretary, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, expressed satisfaction with INEC’s compliance.
He noted that despite the party’s exclusion from previous engagements, LP has now resumed its seat alongside the other 18 registered political parties.
Ibrahim also confirmed the party’s readiness for upcoming political activities, including the Anambra governorship election, as scheduled by INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.
“With the leadership issue now fully resolved, I urge every member of the party to rally around the Abure-led administration,” Ibrahim said.
“What happened was a family issue, and as a family, we are committed to restoring confidence in the party and engaging any aggrieved or misled members.”
He emphasized unity within the party, stating, “The Labour Party will emerge stronger. This is not a case of victory or defeat—everyone is a winner.
The party remains supreme, and all members must focus on achieving our shared goals.”
