The Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Jigawa State has called for the amendment of the state’s electoral law to provide political parties with a 360-day notice period to adequately prepare for elections.
This plea was made during an extraordinary meeting held in Dutse, the state capital, on Monday.
In a communique jointly signed by the Chairman, Murtala Musa, and the Secretary, Isa Adams, the council emphasized the need for reform in light of prevailing economic, social, and political circumstances affecting citizens across the state.
The council highlighted the extensive hardship faced by the populace, requiring immediate and effective intervention from all stakeholders.
The council also noted the looming expiration of the tenure of current local government officials and the economic challenges faced by both the state and its citizens.
In response to these challenges, the council suggested the amendment of the state’s electoral law to grant political parties a 360-day notice period for adequate preparation.
As a result, the council unanimously advised the postponement of the local government election to a later date.
The election, initially scheduled for June, is now subject to a potential rescheduling based on the council’s recommendation.
