An Israeli researcher, Dr. Joseph Shevel said low investment in education by Nigerian politicians is attributed to the fact that the sector takes a long time to mature and getting returns requires patience.
In a keynote address he delivered at the third international conference organized by the Faculty of Social Sciences of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Shevel, who is the President of Galilee Institute, Israel and a member of Israeli Prime Minister’s committee on Social Policy, described education as the future for any nation because of its ripple effect on all sectors of human endeavour.
According to him, to be on the right path for development, a country’s budget for education must meet the basic international standard in line with the Dakar Recommendation. He expressed regret that while the recommendation was that budget for education must not be less than 5% of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Nigeria’s budget for education has been hovering around 1.5%.
Shevel said the economic crisis facing Nigeria is an opportunity to go back to the basics, noting that the country’s problem is an interim situation that could be overcome with hard work and determination.
He said there was no reason for Nigeria to be among the world’s poorest nations going by the enormous resources she is endowed with.
“The rivers in Nigeria are enough for the country to have enough fish and for export. The land resources are enough to grow crops that can feed the whole of Africa. What is required is the will to do what is necessary,” Shevel said.

I never thought that this cure will work but Been diagnosed of herpes is just like been through hell. since 4 years ago i have been diagnosed of Herpes simplex, ever since my life became a total disaster, Curing herpes is now possible because I never thought of it due to the scam all over the internet. I got to know about it through my friend who got herself cured by DR.Odudu. I received my remedy from DR.Odudu through a courier service and today I am totally cured from herpes .
Those who are not spiritually inclined may not believe me. There are powers from the pit of hell remote controlling this nation. Why is it that successive leaders of this country had always repeated the same mistakes of their predecessors. When they are in power they struggle against the powers that has always set the nation backward even when they have good intention. When they leave power they start to criticize their successors. The spirit of deceit, tribalism, corruption, lies, and greed are the powers setting us back. I would recommend that any Nigerian aspiring for political position should first go for deliverance because these spirits control almost every Nigerian. When the President came to power, he said he was looking for clean people who will form his cabinet. For three months the government was in limbo because the president was searching for clean people. After three months the president came up with the same same old hands.I can’t remember the last time we found our selves in the mess we are today.Anyone who always look for excuses to cover his failures may not be able to do something different to come out of the woods since he is comfortable with his excuses.May God purge Nigeria of all these evil spirits so that the enormous resources he has blessed this nation with will not continue to waste.
For instance what can make two judges to make conflicting judgements at the same time in Nigeria. Because the Nigerian judiciary continues to foot drag in adopting IT in the statutes relying continuously on long hand written judgements
The comments here are great and of very high quality , different from
those normally by uneducated and illitrates in the social media where
they also insult themselves and authorities . This being another case
for education .
Irony here being, you spelt illiterates as illitrates. Your punctuation also leaves a lot to be desired. Fair comment though.
This is an absolute truth and sums up the whole range of problems facing us as a nation. But my worries are that I can see any silver lining in the horizon with present leaders we have, from the grassroots to the top. All of them, without a single exception, get into office not to serve the people but self.Ours seems a case of the Creator giving pearls to pigs,or what better way can one depict giving abundant natural resources to a people who do not have value for them. It’s a fatal error to have poverty amidst abundance.
another fact is that if everybody is educated, they will not have thugs and boko haram to use, education will also open the eyes of the masses and will make them know their rights that will also stop these old politician to keep on recycling themselves to positions of power
U are right dear
Please i only hope Nigerians will start thinking out of a box pre-created to consume our mindsets. is it not obvious that the damage already done to the building has to refurbished by you and me? but the question is how? identifying the problem is just the basic part of the solution. what next?
Well said! You forgot to mention that most of our leaders are educated illiterates, self centered and visionless, they prefer that only their lazy children should obtain education.
