Eyitayo Jegede, a governorship aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State, has announced his withdrawal from the forthcoming primary election.
Jegede, who was the PDP candidate in the 2016 and 2020 elections but lost to late Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), stated his commitment to providing solutions to the party’s problems.
Speaking in Akure on Thursday, Jegede explained that after consultations and considerations, he realized the need to reassess whether to continue or take a different path that aligns with the prevailing opinion regarding equitable representation, fairness, and justice, particularly in the governorship contest.

He noted that the PDP’s constitution does not explicitly support zoning, as evidenced by the election of past governors based on merit rather than regional considerations.
Jegede expressed his decision to step aside to allow other competent aspirants the opportunity to contest in the primary and potentially win the governorship election. He pledged his support to all aspirants and assured them of his backing.
Jegede emphasized his commitment to addressing the party’s challenges rather than contributing to them, stating, “I am committed to making all necessary sacrifices to provide solutions to the problems of the party rather than join in compounding it.”
As of the report, four aspirants have purchased the PDP’s N5 million Expression of Interest form and N35 million Nomination Form for the governorship race in Ondo State.
