The Jigawa State Independent Electoral Commission (JISIEC) has announced that 11 political parties, including the state’s major opposition parties, the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), will participate in the upcoming local government election.
This was disclosed by the Executive Chairman of JISIEC, Mr. Auwal Harbo, during a press briefing at the commission’s headquarters in Dutse.
The local government election has been scheduled for October 5, 2024.

Harbo stated that only the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has fielded candidates for all council chairmen and councillor positions across the state’s 27 local government areas.
The APC has put forward 27 candidates for council chairmen, while the NNPP and PDP have only filled candidates in select local government areas.
The JISIEC Chairman assured that all necessary preparations have been made to ensure a smooth, free, and credible election.
“We have concluded all the necessary preparations for a free and credible electoral process,” Harbo said.
He added that 95% of election materials, including both sensitive and non-sensitive items, are ready for distribution ahead of the polls.
Additionally, JISIEC plans to recruit 14,794 ad-hoc staff to oversee the election in the 287 political wards across the 27 local government areas.
Mr. Harbo further assured that adequate security measures have been put in place to guarantee the peaceful conduct of the election.
The commission is working closely with security agencies to ensure a safe environment for voters and election officials on election day.
