Jose Mourinho is never pleased when his players return from international duty with an injury.
But in the case of the knee ligament strain injury has suffered while playing for Belgium, the Manchester United manager is likely to be absolutely angry.
Fellaini is set to be out for a “couple of weeks” after hobbling out of Belgium’s World Cup qualifier with Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The midfield figure was subbed off in the 30th minute after damaging his left knee and underwent a scan on Sunday. He will now almost certainly miss United’s key Premier League clash against Liverpool next weekend.
Fellaini has become very vital to Mourinho recently, his absence will be a blow to the United boss.
However, if you look back at what Mourinho had to say about Fellaini’s injury status last month, you quickly see why the Portuguese will now be furious with Belgium boss Roberto Martinez.
“[Fellaini] is a very important player for me, much more important than what you can imagine.
“I feel weaker without Fellaini in my squad. It doesn’t matter if he is in the team or bench so if his condition is improved I will select him but I cannot say yet. He had a problem in his national team, played the match against Greece and after the match felt the problem.”
The Belgium boss should probably expect a not entirely friendly phone call some time soon.
