The Kulen Allah Cattle Rearers Association of Nigeria (KACRAN) has expressed strong opposition to the proposed establishment of state police, calling it both too expensive and risky to implement.
In a statement issued on Friday in Damaturu, the capital of Yobe State, KACRAN’s National President, Alhaji Khalil Bello, outlined the financial burden of setting up state police forces.
According to Bello, the cost of establishing state police would range between N10 billion to N30 billion, depending on the population of each state.
Additionally, the monthly salaries and operational costs could total around N3 billion.
Bello also raised concerns over the potential misuse of state police by politicians.
He warned that such forces could be exploited for political purposes, undermining public trust and fostering an environment of lawlessness.
“These expenditures could divert critical resources from essential public services such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure, which are vital for the development and well-being of the region,” Bello said.
He further cautioned that state police forces could be used to serve the interests of local political leaders, leading to the victimization of opposition parties.
This, he argued, could create a scenario of political oppression and undermine the rule of law.
Bello recommended that resources be redirected to initiatives that foster sustainable development, such as investments in agriculture, youth employment, and industrial and infrastructure growth.
The KACRAN president also proposed the establishment of a security foundation fund to provide monthly donations to support the national police force.
