The newly elected Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kano State, Yusuf Ado Kibiya, has disclosed that the party opted out of Saturday’s local government elections, describing the process as undemocratic.
Speaking to journalists at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Center in Kano on Monday, Kibiya criticized the elections, stating that they lacked fairness from the outset.
“There is no way local government elections, under the type of governance we operate in Nigeria—especially at the state level—can be free and fair,” Kibiya remarked.
“The last council election in Kano was the worst in the history of local government elections.
From the composition of the electoral body to the sale and screening of forms, nothing about it was transparent. So, what was the point of participating?”
Discussing his leadership goals, Kibiya pledged to strengthen internal democracy within the PDP to ensure inclusiveness and fairness in decision-making.
“This administration will enhance the democratic framework within the party to ensure that every voice is heard, and every vote counts.
Our focus is to identify and support credible leaders committed to serving the public with integrity and excellence,” he said.
As part of his plans for governance, Kibiya announced the rollout of a 10-Year Development Program designed to address critical issues affecting the state.
“This document will engage professionals from various sectors and ensure that elected officials implement its recommendations. Importantly, it will be developed by the people of Kano State to reflect their needs and aspirations,” he stated.
He added that the party would provide a platform for citizens to discuss pressing issues and develop practical solutions.
“We will address leadership challenges, institutional relationships, and tackle social, educational, religious, and economic problems confronting our state. Our mission is to create a sustainable framework for progress,” Kibiya emphasized.
The chairman further stressed his commitment to upholding discipline and accountability within the PDP.
“My administration will set high standards of discipline, fostering an environment where excellence is not just encouraged but expected,” he said.
Kibiya extended an invitation to both party members and non-members to participate in the party’s efforts to improve governance.
“We urge all citizens to join us in this noble mission.
Together, we can build a brighter future for Kano State. Your ideas, participation, and advocacy are crucial as we strive for transparency, accountability, and true service to the people,” he noted.
He concluded by stressing the importance of collaboration in achieving meaningful change.
“The time for change is now, and together, we will succeed. Success will come only if we work hand-in-hand, supporting one another,” Kibiya said.
