The Kano State Government is formulating a State Transport Policy to tackle the transportation challenges facing the state, aiming to establish modern transportation systems in the ancient city.
State Commissioner for Transportation, Engr. Muhammad Ibrahim Diggol, announced this initiative during a press briefing at the NUJ Press Centre in Kano on Wednesday.
Diggol highlighted that the policy will provide a strategic framework for current and future transportation decisions in the state.
The development process includes stakeholder consultations to review the draft policy.
“The challenges of providing modern, efficient, and effective transportation in the state are becoming enormous due to its increasing population and commercial status,” Diggol said.
He emphasized the importance of accessible transportation, stating, “Without ease of access to places of work, education, health, and other social amenities, the quality of life suffers.
And without easy access to markets and industries, economic growth stagnates and poverty prevails.”
The proposed transport policy aims to serve as a working framework for overall transportation development and create an enabling environment for private sector participation in the state’s transportation economy.
“The transport policy will usher in a new dawn and renewed government efforts in the actualization of the vision and mission of transportation development,” Diggol stated.
The vision and mission outlined in the Kano State Development Master Plan focus on providing good accessibility to socio-economic activities for all residents of Kano State within acceptable environmental standards.
The goal is to support a modern multimodal transport system that meets the needs of the people and the standards of a world-class city.
