Kendrick Lamar debuted his new single “Humble” on (March 30) with an extravagant music video. The track and video have been widely praised, but there has been some notable backlash to the record. Feminists have criticized Kendrick’s lyrics in the second verse of “Humble.”
“I’m so fucking sick and tired of the Photoshop/Show me something natural like afro on Richard Pryor/Show me something natural like ass with some stretch marks,” Kendrick raps on the song.
Many women expressed disappointment and outrage over “Humble” on social media, noting that Kendrick was putting down a segment of females in an attempt to uplift others. Some of the critics are fans of Kendrick’s work, yet they feel he comes up short when addressing topics related to women.
“Yal know I love Kendrick & Humble is ah-mazing. BUT that man is hella problematic when it’s comes to women. More specifically Black Women,” one Twitter user wrote.
Social media, particularly Twitter, has been filled with arguments over Kendrick’s lyrics and intentions since “Humble” dropped. Some K. Dot supporters claimed critics were demanding more of Kendrick than they do for most rappers. Quite a few of the feminists expressed the sentiment that Kendrick’s misogyny is just as harmful as the more blatant examples heard in hip-hop.
“You guys just can’t handle that people (namely women) don’t like Kendrick despite his benevolent, incense coated misogyny,” another Twitter user said.
