Former spokesman of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council, Kenneth Okonkwo, has challenged the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to publicly explain how he allegedly betrayed him following his exit from the Labour Party.
Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme, Okonkwo dismissed claims of disloyalty, insisting he never had any political dealings with Obi’s rivals during the last election.
“When I worked for him, I never consulted any politician. I am making a public statement — I never talked to any political party. I was 100% loyal,” Okonkwo said.

He added, “When I left, I told the whole world… I said from now onward, I am not going to speak for this person again. They don’t understand what betrayal means. Anybody who is writing or saying anything about me is a reflection of who that person is, not of who I am.”
Okonkwo, a popular Nollywood actor turned politician, parted ways with Obi and the Labour Party in July 2024, citing internal crises and Obi’s failure to address leadership disputes within the party.
He also denied receiving any monetary benefit or material gifts from Obi during the election campaign, maintaining that his support was based on principle.
Responding to Obi’s earlier veiled remark likening himself to Jesus, who had a disciple betray him, Okonkwo said such an analogy was misplaced.
“How can you betray somebody you are not working for?” he asked. “If he’s insinuating that Jesus had 12 disciples and one turned against him, then he’s claiming he is Jesus. I’ll allow him to hold on to his opinion — nobody fights for God.”
Okonkwo reaffirmed his decision to part ways with the Labour Party, stressing that he stands by his convictions and remains committed to his political ideals.
