Kenya registers slim win over comoros

Johannah Omollo’s goal was enough to give Kenya a slim advantage as they won 1-0 against Comoros at the Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday in the first round first leg of the 2015 Orange Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Both teams were slow to get into the game but the first real chance of the game fell the way of the visitors on 17 minutes with Nchangama Youssef’s freekick deflecting off the wall for an easy pick for Wilson Obungu.

The Harambee Stars had their first chance after 25 minutes and it was Victor Wanyama with a half volley that went just over the post.

Comoros had a great chance to open the scores three minutes later but Soule Mohammed wasted a superb chance shooting wide from close range. Midfielder Jamal Mohammed who had an unusual first half had lost the ball deep into the Comoros’ half only for the visitors to launch a swift counter attack, Ali M’madi feeding Mohammed.

Kenya sensed that they were living dangerously and increased their activity upfront with Dennis Oliech firing two shots at goal around the half-hour mark.

On 34 minutes, Omollo opened the scores in superb fashion with a spectacular shot from 30 yards that the the Comoros keeper had no answer to.

The goal lifted the Stars’ spirits with David Owino coming close, but his header brushed the cross bar from a Jamal freekick.

In the second period, the home side started well and Oliech should have doubled the lead after ten minutes on. Ayub Timbe had gone on a great run on the right before picking Mugubi whose shot fell onto Oliech’s pass, but the experienced goal getter could not beat the Comoros keeper one-on-one.

Stars kept the pressure going but the firepower to score was lacking. Clifton Miheso came on for Allan Wanga while MacDonald Mariga made his international return on 75 minutes, replacing Jamal.

The second leg will take place in a fortnight in Moroni, with the winner advancing to the second round.
