Everton and England midfielder Ross Barkley could be ruled out for several weeks with a suspected broken toe.
.
Barkley, 20, has suceeded for the club this season, but missed Saturday’s 2-0 win over Norwich with the problem.
.
“We are going to assess him and it seems he is going to be out for a while, it could be broken,” said Everton manager Roberto Martinez.
.
If the injury is as bad as feared, Barkley will miss the Merseyside derby at Liverpool’s stadium on 28 January.
.
Everton defender Leighton Baines fractured his toe when Everton met Liverpool at Goodison Park in late November, an injury which saw him miss six matches.
.
Barkley scored in the Toffees’ FA Cup win over Queens Park Rangers last week, but was not included in the match day squad against Norwich, where Everton paraded new signing Aiden McGeady.
.
“We are going to assess it to see if there was displacement or not, it is a very similar incident to the one Leighton Baines had,” added Martinez, who has dismissed reports linking Barkley with a move away from the club.
.
“Before we say exactly what it is, that is the fear, that there could be a fracture in his toe.”
.
The injury will not prevent Barkley, who has earned three England caps this season, from travelling with the squad to a warm-weather training camp in Tenerife ahead of next week’s trip to West Brom.
