Philippe Coutinho has revealed exactly what manager Jurgen Klopp demands from his frontline as Liverpool went top of the Premier League following a wonderful attacking display in Sunday’s 6-1 victory over Watford.
Coutinho was in fine form at Anfield on the weekend as he scored the Reds’ second goal of the day and provided the assist for Sadio Mane’s opener.
Fellow frontman and compatriot Roberto Firmino was also on the scoresheet against the Walter Mazzarri’s team, and Coutinho explained how the movement from the forward trio has helped Liverpool reach the summit of the table.
“The manager asks us to move a lot and that’s what we tried to do in the game and create space for our teammates,” Coutinho said. “That’s what we tried to do today. We had a good win, it’s good for us and we are happy with that.
“My target is to play well and help my teammates, contribute in the games and learn a lot, and that’s it.”
Meanwhile, captain Jordan Henderson echoed the thoughts of Klopp by insisting that no trophies are handed out at this early stage of the season.
The midfielder stressed the importance of continuing to work hard at the training ground and says the side will not get ahead of themselves.
“This is a very good team with very good players, but you don’t get anything for being top in November,” Henderson said.
“It’s just another game every week, like I keep saying — I know it’s boring and you keep hearing us say it, but it’s the truth. We’re just concentrating on each game as it comes, working very hard in training and then applying it at the weekend.
“We’ve just got to keep going with that mentality and keep working for each other. If we do that, we’ll be in a good position at the end of the season.”
He added: “There are a lot of teams up there. We’re just confident with the performances and the results — we need to keep the momentum going.
“In training there has been a very high level and we need to keep that going. The players that you don’t see playing, that are on the bench and in the squad, are very important to us because we work very hard in training as a group and they push each and every one of us in training.
“I think that’s really important throughout the season and that has been very good so far. We’ve just got to keep that going and keep putting on performances like that.”
