Former Kano State Governor and the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has announced his resignation from the party with immediate effect.
Kwankwaso disclosed this in a press statement dated March 29, 2026, stating that his decision was driven by the need for strategic political realignment amid evolving dynamics in Nigeria’s political landscape.

He expressed appreciation to the NNPP for the opportunity to serve as its National Leader and presidential candidate during the 2023 general elections, describing his exit from the party as a difficult decision.
According to him, the current trajectory of the nation’s politics necessitates aligning with another political platform that offers a better opportunity to effectively pursue national change.
“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect,” the statement read.
