The Kwara State Government has declared a crackdown on street begging, child hawking, and the sale of intoxicating substances, especially within Ilorin metropolis, citing growing security and environmental concerns.
The warning was issued by the Commissioner for Social Development, Hajia Mariam Nna Fatima Imam, during a familiarization visit to the State House of Assembly’s Committee on Business, Innovation, Industry, Women Affairs and Social Development in Ilorin.
Hajia Imam expressed serious concern over the rising incidents of street begging and described it as a looming security threat.

She emphasized that the government would not hesitate to prosecute individuals involved in child hawking, street vending, and the distribution of harmful substances.
“We will intensify awareness campaigns across the state to educate residents on the legal consequences of street begging and related vices,” she stated. “Jingles in English, Yoruba, and Hausa will be broadcast across the three senatorial districts to reach all corners of the state.”
The Commissioner said the ministry has already engaged relevant stakeholders to support the government’s effort in restoring order and protecting vulnerable children from abuse.
“Our goal is to rid the streets of miscreants and ensure the safety of our children. Street begging not only endangers public safety but also tarnishes the state’s image and environment,” she added.
Responding, the Chairman of the House Committee, Hon. Olushola Odetundun, commended the ministry’s proactive measures, describing them as timely and necessary to prevent the issue from escalating into a major security concern.
He encouraged the ministry to keep the Assembly informed about its challenges and pledged the lawmakers’ support in addressing any policy or legislative gaps hindering the ministry’s mission.
The state government reiterated its commitment to enforcing relevant laws to safeguard the welfare of residents and maintain public order.
