The leadership crisis rocking the Labour Party (LP) has taken a fresh turn with the suspension of the embattled factional National Chairman, Julius Abure, by the party’s National Executive Council (NEC).
Abure’s suspension, announced on Friday by the Chairman of the party’s Caretaker Committee, Senator Nenadi Usman, follows his alleged defiance of court orders and continued claim to the office of National Chairman, despite a Supreme Court ruling nullifying his leadership.
According to the NEC, Abure’s actions amount to impersonation and disregard for the rule of law, undermining the integrity of the Labour Party.

“After a careful and comprehensive review of the Supreme Court judgment delivered on Friday, April 4, 2025, the National Executive Council is deeply concerned by the subsequent actions of Barr. Julius Abure, particularly his continued impersonation of the esteemed office of the National Chairman of the Labour Party,” the statement read.
“In exercise of its constitutional mandate and in strict accordance with the disciplinary provisions of the Labour Party Constitution 2019 (As Amended), the NEC, in session, hereby announces the immediate suspension of Barr. Julius Abure from the Labour Party, effective today, the 7th day of May, 2025, in the first instance.”
The NEC further warned Abure to desist from parading himself as the National Chairman or a member of the Labour Party, stressing that his tenure had long expired and his claim to the position had been nullified by the apex court.
This development comes just days after the Abure-led faction announced the indefinite suspension of several prominent party members, including Abia State Governor Alex Otti, Senator Ireti Kingibe, and four others.
Their suspension was disclosed by the faction’s National Secretary, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, on Wednesday.
The escalating internal conflict has raised further concerns about the party’s stability ahead of the next electoral cycle.
