The Julius Abure-led National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Labour Party (LP) has declared that the party will not be part of any opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
This was made known in a communique issued after the party’s NEC meeting held in Abuja.
Abure stated that the Labour Party would instead focus on internal restructuring and reconciliation efforts, with a view to strengthening its position ahead of the next electoral cycle.

His remarks come amid ongoing efforts by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to form an opposition alliance aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu in 2027. Reports suggest that Atiku is open to collaborating with Peter Obi, the LP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections.
However, the LP leadership has distanced itself from such plans.
Parts of the communique read:
“NEC declared that the party is not and will not be part of any coalition towards the 2027 General Election. The party will rather continue to rebuild, reposition, re-strategise, reconcile, strengthen, drive its programs and policies, win more members towards winning the 2027 General Elections.”
The NEC also reaffirmed its commitment to party unity and national development.
“NEC expressed its commitment to continue to seek peace and reconciliation within the ranks of the Party and again extends an olive branch to all aggrieved members of the party to sheath their swords in the overall interest of the Party and our dear Nation.
“NEC reiterated its belief in the Nation’s Democracy and the party’s commitment to its growth and deepening as the only means to national development,” the statement added.
