The Labour Party, LP, has formally recognised Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, as its National Leader and extended goodwill to its former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, following his move to the coalition African Democratic Congress, ADC.
The development was disclosed in a communique issued by the party’s National Secretary, Darlington Nwokocha, after a meeting of the Labour Party National Working Committee, NWC, held on Wednesday.
According to the communique, the meeting deliberated on matters bordering on the party’s stability, growth and strategic direction.

“The NWC, in a unanimous decision, affirms its recognition of His Excellency, Governor Alex Chioma Otti, as the National Leader of the Labour Party,” the communique stated.
It added, “The National leadership of the Labour Party wishes His Excellency, Mr. Peter Obi, success in his future political endeavours and in his new political affiliation.”
The party also announced the recognition of a former Minister of Finance, Nenadi Usman, as its National Chairman.
The LP emphasised that it remains guided by the Supreme Court judgment of April 4, 2025, which declared that the tenure of Julius Abure as National Chairman had expired.
The party urged the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to accord Usman and Nwokocha all rights and privileges due to their offices in line with the apex court’s ruling.
“The NWC reaffirmed that all congresses and the National Convention of the party shall proceed in strict compliance with the party’s constitution,” the communique noted.
Members at all levels were encouraged to actively participate in the forthcoming congresses.
The Labour Party expressed appreciation to its members and the Nigerian public for their continued support, reiterating that the party remains united, indivisible and committed to building a Nigeria anchored on equal opportunity, social justice and good governance.
