In a bid to bolster its healthcare infrastructure and services, the Lagos state government has earmarked a substantial N151.66 billion for the health sector in its 2024 budget, representing a 1.5% increase from the N149.353 billion allocated in the previous fiscal year of 2023.
The overall 2024 fiscal year budget for Lagos, a staggering N2.246 trillion, allocates a significant 6.75% of its funds to the health sector, underscoring the government’s commitment to enhancing public health services and facilities.
Upon approval, the 2024 healthcare budget will be strategically distributed across various entities, including the Lagos State Ministry of Health, primary health care board, university teaching hospital, college of medicine, state health management agency, board of traditional medicine, college of Nursing and midwifery, health monitoring and accreditation agency, blood transfusion service, accident and emergency centre, general hospitals, maternity care facilities, and the health service commission.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu shed light on the overarching theme of the 2024 budget, titled “The Budget of Renewal,” which builds upon the foundations laid in previous budgets over the last four years. The governor emphasized the key focus areas of the health agenda, revolving around infrastructure development, personnel welfare, and ensuring access to affordable and high-quality healthcare services, particularly for the most economically vulnerable segments of the population.
Governor Sanwo-Olu disclosed that significant progress is already underway with the 2023 health budget. Construction of a new 280-bed unit at the Ojo General Hospital is in progress to cater to the increasing healthcare needs of the community. Additionally, renovation and remodeling works at five general hospitals are nearing completion.
Noteworthy projects include the establishment of new doctors’ quarters at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital and Isolo General Hospital. Ongoing projects at two general hospitals aim to further enhance the accommodation and facilities available for medical professionals.
Highlighting a monumental achievement, the governor mentioned the upcoming completion of the New Massey Children’s Hospital—a seven-storey, 150-bed facility that is poised to become the largest children’s hospital in West Africa.
Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the state’s commitment to emergency healthcare services with the completion of 10 triage and oxygen therapy centres. The acquisition of new ambulances, including a floating clinic or ambulance boat designed for immediate rescue operations during boat accidents, further demonstrates the government’s dedication to prompt and efficient emergency response.
In a groundbreaking move, the governor announced the introduction of a health insurance and endowment fund designed specifically for vulnerable and disadvantaged Lagosians. This initiative, named the Eko Social Health Alliance, falls under the comprehensive framework of the Lagos State Health Scheme, aiming to provide sustainable healthcare coverage for those in need.
As the Lagos state government continues to prioritize healthcare as a fundamental aspect of its developmental agenda, the 2024 budget signals a proactive approach to address current challenges and build a resilient and inclusive healthcare system for the future. Infostride News will continue to monitor and report on the progress and impact of these initiatives on the well-being of Lagosians.
