Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu stood proudly among Nigeria’s most accomplished business and public sector leaders at Tuesday’s Business Leadership Awards, where his administration’s transformative infrastructure projects earned him top honors. The annual ceremony, held at the Eko Convention Centre, recognized exceptional contributions to Nigeria’s economic and social development across multiple sectors.
Sanwo-Olu received the “Excellence in Public Service Leadership” award for spearheading landmark initiatives including the Lagos Rail Mass Transit system, the Lekki Deep Sea Port, and the ongoing Fourth Mainland Bridge project. The selection committee highlighted his administration’s innovative approaches to urban planning and crisis management during the COVID-19 pandemic as key factors in their decision.

“True leadership is measured by tangible impact on people’s lives,” Sanwo-Olu remarked during his acceptance speech. “Every kilometer of new road, every modernized school, and every improved healthcare facility represents our commitment to making Lagos Africa’s model megacity.”
The gala event shone equally on Nigeria’s private sector trailblazers. Pharma industry pioneer Dr. Stella Okoli of Emzor Pharmaceuticals collected a lifetime achievement award, while banking reformer Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede was celebrated for revolutionizing Africa’s financial services landscape. Corporate governance advocate Mosunmola Belo-Olusoga rounded out the honorees, receiving recognition for shattering glass ceilings in Nigeria’s boardrooms.
Keynote speaker Tony Elumelu, the billionaire philanthropist, framed the evening’s celebrations within broader continental aspirations. “Africa’s transformation requires public-private partnership at its finest – exactly the caliber of leadership we’re honoring tonight,” the Heirs Holdings chairman told the audience of 500 dignitaries.
Event organizers from the Nigerian Business Leadership Initiative noted this year’s selections deliberately highlighted leaders whose work created multiplier effects across multiple sectors. With Lagos contributing nearly 30% of Nigeria’s GDP, Sanwo-Olu’s urban renewal programs were deemed particularly impactful for enabling business growth while improving citizens’ quality of life.
As the ceremony concluded, attendees pointed to the honorees’ collective achievements as evidence of Nigeria’s growing capacity to solve complex development challenges through visionary leadership. For Governor Sanwo-Olu, the award marks the latest in a string of recent recognitions, following his October selection as West Africa’s Governor of the Year by financial publication The Banker.
