Obi Aguocha, a member of the House of Representatives representing Umuahia North/Umuahia South/Ikwuano Federal Constituency of Abia State, has strongly criticized former President Muhammadu Buhari for reportedly considering the elimination of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Buhari’s alleged contemplation of eliminating Kanu was revealed in a new book written by his former aide, Femi Adesina.
According to Adesina, Buhari mentioned that bringing Kanu back to Nigeria to face trial would be a favor.
In a statement released in Abuja on Monday, Aguocha expressed deep concern over Buhari’s reported remarks about Kanu’s handling, describing them as alarming and raising serious questions about the commitment to the rule of law and human rights.
Aguocha emphasized that suggesting the elimination of a citizen, even in retrospect, undermines the principles of justice and due process.
He referenced a recent judgment by the Supreme Court of Nigeria, which condemned the government’s actions regarding Kanu’s home and his rendition from Kenya.
The lawmaker called on President Buhari to confess all actions taken against Kanu and the South East during his tenure, criticizing the reported suggestion that subjecting Kanu to such illegality was a favor.
Aguocha warned against playing God in Kanu’s case and highlighted what he perceived as a personal vendetta against the former president.
Aguocha concluded by urging Buhari and his spokesperson, Femi Adesina, to avoid prejudice and uphold the standards of civility expected from leaders.
