Belgian George Leekens has been named the new coach of the Tunisia national football team on a two-year contract.
The 64-year old, who previous job in Africa was a brief spell in charge of Algeria in 2003 replaces Dutchman Ruud Krol, whose tenure ended after the 2014 FIFA World Cup Playoffs last October.
“Belgian Technician, George Leekens is the new Head Coach of the Carthage Eagles. He has signed a two-year contract. He will be assisted by a Tunisian who will be appointed later,” the Tunisia Football Federation said in a statement.
According to the statement, the new trainer will be unveiled at a press conference next week in the Tunisian capital, Tunis.
He will be expected to guide the Carthage Eagles to the 2015 Orange Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled for Morocco from 17 January to 7 February.
Leekens, a two-time Belgium national team coach was last in charge of Club Brugge between May and November 2012. He has also worked in Netherlands, Turkey and Saudi Arabia.
