Hip-hop star Lil Wayne left local fans hanging yet again when he failed to show up at his own concert Friday night at the Target Center.
At 10:32 p.m. Friday – an hour when many arena headliners are already playing an encore – the Minneapolis venue announced the 34-year-old rapper had postponed his set “due to plane mechanical issues … Target Center was prepared to host the full lineup, so we sincerely apologize to all fans for the inconvenience.” Lil Wayne’s three opening acts had already performed.
The concert was originally booked for Feb. 24, but three days before that date, it was postponed due to “scheduling conflicts.” Lil Wayne was also set to play the Minneapolis club the Venue in the summer of 2015. He canceled that gig at the last minute, reportedly after his entourage refused to undergo the club’s security procedures.
Minutes after Friday’s announcement, Lil Wayne tweeted an apology using creative spelling: “Minnesota I’m sorry I kouldn’t make it tonight. Had plane issues that was out of my kontrol. Will make it up to y’all and reskhedule.”

It’s unclear whether fans will get a refund or if Lil Wayne will actually schedule a new concert. The Target Center is set to close April 16 for several months of renovations. A spokesperson for the venue said an announcement with further details will be coming soon.
Born Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., the rapper headlined successful local arena shows in 2009 and 2011 but has struggled with health issues and fights with his record label in recent years. He announced the impending arrival of “Tha Carter V” back in 2012; the album has yet to be released. Lil Wayne has also claimed multiple times he would retire when he hits 35.
