Premier League title chasers Liverpool could be set to strengthen their attacking options during the January transfer window.
.
According to The Metro, the Reds are targeting a move for PSV Eindhoven captain Georginio Wijnaldum and are ready to offer a deal worth £9 million before the end of the month.
.
23-year-old Wijnaldum has been at Philips Stadion for almost three years, having moved from Eredivisie rivals Feyenoord during the summer of 2011.
.
The attacking midfielder, who has also earned three senior international caps for his native Netherlands, had been in fine form for Phillip Cocu’s side this season, netting four goals in as many league games before suffering a back injury that has seen him sidelined for many months.
.
Such an injury would appear to make Wijnaldum a risky target for Liverpool, particularly with a number of Brendan Rodgers’ existing midfielders having suffered fitness woes of their own during recent weeks.
.
Liverpool, who beat Stoke City 5-3 in a thrilling encounter at the Britannia Stadium yesterday evening, are currently fourth in the Premier League table on 42 points – just five adrift of leaders Manchester City.
.
While many thought that the Merseyside outfit would do well just to challenge for Champions League qualification, it appears they have what it takes to remain in the thick of the title race.
.
Strengthening the squad will surely be top of Rodgers’ agenda and a player of Wijnaldum’s quality would surely provide a huge boost.
