French President Emmanuel Macron has reaffirmed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is a legitimate leader, emphasizing that he was democratically elected through a free and fair process, unlike Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Macron made the remarks on Thursday in response to US President Donald Trump’s recent claim that Zelensky is a dictator for not holding elections.
Zelensky’s five-year term was set to expire in 2024, but elections were postponed due to the martial law imposed by Kyiv in February 2022 following Russia’s full-scale invasion.

Speaking during a social media Q&A session aimed at raising public awareness about the war in Ukraine and France’s diplomatic role, Macron dismissed the criticism, highlighting the complex realities of governing during wartime.
His comments come amid shifting US policy toward the conflict following Trump’s return to office last month.
