Kano State has witnessed another significant political shift as two prominent factions within the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and the Kwankwasiyya Movement have formally defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The defectors include the Kwankwasiyya Scholars group, led by Hon. Ahmad Yusuf Maidoki, and Hon. Faruq Abdulrazak Musa, a former chairmanship aspirant for Tudun Wada Local Government Area under the NNPP.
Their defection was announced during a courtesy visit to the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, at his residence in Abuja on Friday.
In a symbolic move marking their exit from the Kwankwasiyya fold, the defectors publicly discarded the red caps—an iconic symbol of the movement—signifying their full embrace of the APC’s political ideology.
Speaking on the development, Senator Barau stated that the defectors were drawn to the APC due to its people-centered governance and commitment to the development of Kano State.
“They thrashed the red cap, the symbol of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, and embraced the People’s Party, APC, citing our commitment to developing our people and state,” he said.
Barau emphasized that the growing wave of defections from the NNPP reflects rising public confidence in the APC’s inclusive political culture, people-oriented legislation, and developmental strides.
“APC is big enough to accommodate all. You will be treated fairly and equally like other members of the party,” he assured.
The Deputy Senate President further noted that while the NNPP once held considerable sway in Kano politics, its influence is now largely confined to certain areas within the Kano Central Senatorial District.
“In Kano North, the NNPP has no meaningful presence, and in Kano South, more key figures are already preparing to join the APC,” he added.
