The Argentine international has yet to feature for the Premier League leaders, who have won all two of their matches this season by same 3-0 margin, but will now hope to return in time for the start of the Uefa Champions League season in mid-September.

“It happened in training,” the Argentina defender told the club’s website. “It’s the first time in 12 years of senior football that I’ve ever been injured like this so it’s a blow, especially at the start of the season.”

City boss Manuel Pellegrini confirmed on Friday that summer signing, Fabian Delph, is back in training, as well as Gael Clichy.

“Delph returned to full training on Wednesday and the rest of the squad have no problems,” said the Chilean boss.

Pellegrini also confirmed that Nicolas Otamendi, signed from Valencia on a five-year deal worth £32m, is unlikely to start at Everton on Sunday.
