Manchester United are growing increasingly confident that Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan will opt to join the Red Devils in the summer, according to the Mail Online.
.
The 23-year-old has been linked with Real Madrid and Barcelona in recent days, while Arsenal and Chelsea have also shown an interest, but it’s the Premier League champions who appear to be in pole position to secure his signature.
.
Gundogan is widely regarded as one of the best midfielders in the Bundesliga – and the Germany international played an integral role in BVB’s Bundesliga triumph in 2012, as well as their run to last season’s Champions League final.
.
However, Dortmund could lose their star midfielder, whose contract expires in 2015.
.
Gundogan has a £23m release clause included in his current deal, and United may attempt to trigger it during the summer transfer window.
.
The Premier League champions have also been linked with Dortmund’s attacking winger Marco Reus and striker Robert Lewandowski, who will join Bayern Munich at the end of the season, in recent months.
.
However, David Moyes has now set his sights on Gundogan, who would significantly strengthen United’s midfield options.
.
With Real Madrid and Barcelona currently stronger than the English club in midfield, Gundogan will be acutely aware that his best chances of playing regular football will be at Old Trafford.
