Chelsea interim manager Calum McFarlane has admitted that Enzo Maresca’s sudden sacking on New Year’s Day caused shock in the Blues’ dressing room. He recently had his say while speaking to the press, and fans have been reacting.
According to him, some Chelsea players were shocked by the decision to let Maresca go because the Italian coach has been successful with the Blues since he joined.

McFarlane added that the team deserves lots of praise for showing character against a quality Manchester City side.
His words, “I didn’t want to wave at the away fans, if I’m honest. But Reece asked me to. I think it’s a good moment to maybe speak about the players. This is not an easy job. There’s a lot of change that’s gone on. Enzo was incredibly successful with this group. Some of them were shocked by the decision.
So the character that they’ve shown in the last two days, the character that they’ve shown today, Reece is a big one, like Reece, Tosin [Adarabioyo], Enzo [Fernandez]. They’ve really dragged the group together because everyone thought we were coming here to lose.
No one thought we stood a chance. But we knew that the character and the talent in this group did and they’ve really dragged it through. So I can’t speak highly enough about the characters in the group. That’s just another moment of Reece being selfless and wanting to share the applause, really.”
WOW.

The club competes in the Premier League, the top division of English football. They won their first major honour, the League championship, in 1955. The club won the FA Cup for the first time in 1970, their first European honour, the Cup Winners’ Cup, in 1971, and became the third English club to win the Club World Cup in 2022.
On 7 May 2022, Chelsea confirmed that terms have been agreed for a new ownership group, led by Todd Boehly, Clearlake Capital, Mark Walter and Hansjörg Wyss, to acquire the club. The group was later known as BlueCo.
The UK government approved the £4.25bn takeover, ending Abramovich’s 19-year ownership of the club. Bruce Buck, who served as chairman since 2003, was replaced by Boehly, while long-serving club director and de facto sporting director Marina Granovskaia left, as did Petr Čech from the role of technical and performance advisor.
