Mbappé, Falcao Knock Borussia Dortmund Out Of UCL

mbappe3Leonardo Jardim promised Monaco would stay true to their offensive style in the Champions League semi-finals after eliminating Borussia Dortmund thanks to another ruthless attacking display.

Monaco scored at least three goals for the fifth consecutive time in the tournament and 18-year-old Kylian Mbappé became the first player to score in his first four Champions League knockout games as the Ligue 1 leaders beat Dortmund 3-1 to secure a 6-3 aggregate win.

“It could have been 5-3 or 6-3 because both teams missed several chances,” said Jardim. “We knew that they give a lot of space and we took advantage from it. Now, regardless of who we will take on next, we will be facing a very experienced team.

“Tonight we played a very solid game, we were in control but we showed ambition. We were always looking for the extra goal, that is the way we play, it is in our DNA. Our rivals will want to draw us [on Friday] but our ambition is to enjoy it and play with our attacking qualities like we always do.”

Monaco, the first team in the Champions League to reach the last four after going through two preliminary rounds, had the game almost wrapped up after early goals by Mbappé and Radamel Falcao. Marco Reus gave Dortmund hope with a fine finish, only for Valère Germain to wrap up the win for the hosts 21 seconds after coming on for Mbappé.

The kick-off was delayed by five minutes after the German team arrived late at the Louis-II stadium due to traffic problems, according to Uefa. However, Dortmund said their team bus had been held up by police at their hotel for 20 minutes. Thomas Tuchel said the incident evoked bad memories of last Tuesday’s attack, when three explosions went off as the team bus headed to the stadium for the first leg. “Everyone was prepared and in the bus, but we couldn’t move for 16 or 17 minutes,” said the Dortmund manager. “The police was there to escort us and we asked them why we couldn’t move and they just said ‘for safety reasons’. You can imagine that eight days after the attack that [this is] the worst thing that can happen.”
