The Minister of Information, Mrs. Patricia Akwashiki has called on communication practitioners across the country, to give timely and credible reporting and avoid vacuum at every point in time, to prevent rumor and misinformation.
The Minister made the remarks during an inspection visit to the Voice of Nigeria (VON), at Radio House, Abuja.
Mrs. Akwashiki expressed appreciation of the professional role of VON in transmitting credible and timely information to Nigerians and the international community, which has helped in projecting the image of the country, positively.
While expressing the hope that government will look into the constraints of the organization, with a view to finding suitable accommodation for its staff, the Minister urged the management of VON, to revisit and review the laws setting them up, with a view to commercializing some segments.
The Minister also went in for the organization’s live radio program me, ” In The News”, where she lauded the immeasurable achievements of President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration in the area of road, rail, aviation and health transformation.
Earlier, the Director General of Von, Samson Worlu noted that although the Voice of Nigeria was established in 1961 with the aim of becoming the International Radio Broadcasting Station of first choice and a unifying factor for the African people, he decried the zero capital allocation to the Organization for the year, 2015. This he said, has hampered ability to acquire modern news gathering equipments for the Organization.
