Meemim Launches New Platform for Teams and SMBs, Signs Up Over 500 Companies in Less Than 24 Hours, Briefly Crashes in the Process
“The response was amazing and very gratifying,” said Alec Pestov, CEO and co-founder of Meemim, “We forecasted 100-150 new company sign-ups in the first week. We had to scramble a bit to handle quadruple that amount in less than 24 hours.”
While the main application remained operable for existing clients, the sign-up volume was more than the on-boarding engine could handle. The sign-up system briefly went down, as Meemim staff added processing capacity on Microsoft’s Azure platform.
“Luckily, the flexibility of MS Azure allowed us to quickly add resources and cope with the unexpected workload once we realized we had set our targets too low. We were able to make adjustments on the fly and maintain the momentum,” added Pestov, “We did go through a brief outage, but on the other hand – this was a good learning experience for the upcoming roll out of the global multilingual version of the system.”
The path to delivering a next generation collaboration tool for distributed teams was not an easy one, and required a significant shift in understanding user engagement as a core driver for successful collaboration.
“Originally, our design philosophy was an iteration of the current ‘top down’ hierarchal approach reflected in most Intranets and corporate Wikis. Although we felt that our search feature and user interface were a step forward, we discovered that this was not enough,” said Pestov. “People simply do not want to use the system that is not built around them. There was still the user resistance issue in having to conform to organizing and accessing data in a rigid and prescribed way.”
The Meemim team addressed this by taking a “bottom up” approach, focusing on designing a decentralized, user-driven application and incorporating a social media type sharing philosophy.
This created an information sharing environment similar to the Slack messaging platform, but with the focus on information and document management.
“There’s no way you can keep track of the latest release of a document via email – not only do multiple copies exist, but finding the most current version is inevitably a time-waster,” said Marian Bukal, co-founder and CTO, “Better to look at the individual’s distributed community and create an interface that reflected those natural connections and the most current instances of shared information.”
