The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has commended the International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) for successfully conducting elections for their new executive officers.
Idris praised the peaceful leadership transition within the NUJ, which saw the emergence of Malam Alhassan Yahaya as President and Abimbola Oyetunde as the union’s first female Deputy National President.
He described the election as a reflection of inclusivity and progress within the NUJ, solidifying its role as a leading professional body in Nigeria.
“I wish to congratulate Messrs Muskilu Mojeed, Chief Executive Officer of Premium Times, and Ahmed Shekarau, Managing Director of Media Trust, on their re-election as President and Secretary of IPI Nigeria, respectively, alongside four other officers,” Idris said in a statement released on Sunday.
The minister also expressed gratitude to the Imo State Government for its support and hospitality in hosting NUJ members and delegates, which contributed to the success of the election.
Idris called on both the IPI and NUJ to continue promoting ethical and responsible journalism, urging their members to prioritize integrity and accountability in their work.
“As defenders of truth, the media must uphold the highest standards of professionalism to strengthen our democracy,” he said.
The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to press freedom and pledged to create a conducive environment for free, fair, and responsible journalism in Nigeria.
