Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has shared his disappointment at the club’s recent acquisition of Senne Lammens. He recently had his say while speaking to the press, and fans have been reacting.
According to him, Martinez is exactly the kind of goalkeeper MUFC should have in their team, not Lammens, whose single season of top-flight football in Belgium could be insufficient to prepare him for the pressure of the No.1 shirt at Old Trafford.

Peter added that he had never heard of Lammens before the links to the young goalie during the summer transfer window.
His words, “We should have signed Emi Martinez. In fact, we should have gone for Gianluigi Donnarumma when we had the chance. With Martinez, everything was lined up, and that felt like really good news, because he’s exactly the kind of goalkeeper Manchester United should have.
He’s proven at the very highest level. He does all the basics brilliantly, but beyond that, he provides real leadership. He’s the sort of goalkeeper who makes strikers think twice. That presence is vital. So it was hugely disappointing to hear the deal fell through for financial reasons.
As for Lammens, I’ll be honest, I’d never heard of him until the link came up. I know his stats are excellent across the top ten European leagues. But that was with Antwerp in Belgium, in a team that finished fifth. He saved four out of eight penalties, but recruitment based purely on stats is risky. Stats don’t show how you react after a mistake, or how you cope with the pressure of Manchester United.
That pressure is unlike anywhere else in football. Lammens could turn out to be the best signing ever – but right now, it feels like a hopeful one, and that’s not what United need at this moment in time. If we’d signed him alongside Martinez, that would have made perfect sense: a proven World Cup winner as number one, with a talented young keeper developing behind him.”
WOW.
Manchester United Football Club, commonly referred to as Man United or simply United, is a professional football club based in Old Trafford, Greater Manchester, England. The club competes in the Premier League, the top division in the English football league system.
Nicknamed the Red Devils, they were founded as Newton Heath LYR Football Club in 1878, but changed their name to Manchester United in 1902. After a spell playing in Clayton, Manchester, the club moved to their current stadium, Old Trafford, in 1910.
Alex Ferguson and his assistant Archie Knox arrived from Aberdeen on the day of Atkinson’s dismissal, and guided the club to an 11th-place finish in the league. Despite a second-place finish in 1987–88, the club was back in 11th place the following season. Reportedly on the verge of being dismissed, Ferguson’s job was saved by victory over Crystal Palace in the 1990 FA Cup final.
The following season, Manchester United claimed their first UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup title. That triumph allowed the club to compete in the European Super Cup for the first time, where United beat European Cup holders Red Star Belgrade 1–0 at Old Trafford. The club appeared in two consecutive League Cup finals in 1991 and 1992 the left and the right, but he’s not got any sense of danger yet, and empties the midfield area too readily.
