The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) shipping branch district executive has paid a familiarisation visit to the West African Container Terminal (WACT), Onne.
The visit, which took place last week, Thursday, February 19, 2026, was one of the policy thrusts of the new administration led by its District Chairman, Comrade Raymond Nwawueze, which, according to him, was anchored on expanding existing relationships to increase robust synergy between his members and the management of shipping companies.
Comrade Nwawueze has poured encomiums on the management of West African Container Terminal (WACT), led by the Managing Director, Mr Jeethu Jose, for injecting $115M into the Onne Terminal Upgrade Project (OTUP).
He noted that such investment has ensured the acquisition of state-of-the-art equipment at WACT, Terminal, thereby positioning the company as a business destination East of the Niger.

Comrade Nwawueze also praised WACT for its giant strides in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), which include providing employment and other empowerment opportunities, as well as social amenities.
He used the occasion to assure WACT management of his association’s willingness to cooperate with them at all times for an effective and harmonious working relationship.
He added that WACT has been of immense help to his association, insisting that a lot also needs to be done.
“Today is a special day for us at the shipping branch district of the maritime workers union. This visit has accorded us a great opportunity to interact with the management, and we can’t take it for granted,” Comrade Nwawueze said
Continuing, he posited, “We are here to officially introduce the new executive of the MWUN District Shipping branch to your management. Though some of us are not new here, we’re here purposely to widen an already established relationship and make it better.”
Comrade Nwawueze used the opportunity to inform WACT management of the upcoming Unit elections, and to solicit logistics and Security support.

Responding, the Managing Director of WACT Terminal Onne, Mr Jeethu Jose, represented by the Head of Human Resources, APM/ WACT Terminal Nigeria, Mrs Uzoma Ben-Ude, expressed gratitude for the visit.
Mr Jose said the visit underscored the WACT Terminal union’s friendly posture, insisting that such would continue.
His words: “WACT is a union-friendly organisation. We shall continue the existing relationship and improve and leverage it.
“Relationship is not a one-off thing,” Jose noted.
“We believe unions are an extension of the management, hence our Workers can be reached through you.”
The Managing Director, however, charged them with taking safety and other standard operating procedures seriously.
“We can work together, and it is always good to communicate effectively with your members”, even as he promised assistance when the need arises.
