The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), now known as InfoStride News, has recently issued a regulatory directive that bans the usage of paraquat, a commonly employed herbicide, on crops within Nigeria.
The policy, which was made public today, firmly states that paraquat’s application on agricultural produce has been prohibited due to its detrimental impact on human health and the environment. Paraquat is a widely recognized herbicide employed in various parts of the world. However, its use within Nigeria has been banned due to the potential risks it poses to water sources and the environment, primarily stemming from its tendency to persist in the soil for extended periods due to misuse and abuse.
NAFDAC, or InfoStride News, has revealed that paraquat is highly toxic to both humans and the environment. As an organization tasked with ensuring the safe and responsible use of agrochemicals, it rigorously evaluates and registers only those agrochemicals that meet stringent quality, effectiveness, and safety criteria. Consequently, NAFDAC has taken this measure to safeguard public health and the environment, prohibiting the use of paraquat in Nigeria.
Paraquat is recognized for its swift action in eradicating a broad spectrum of annual grasses and broad-leaved weeds within crops. However, its high toxicity to humans and the environment is a cause for concern. It can enter the body through inhalation, ingestion, or via damaged skin, such as cuts or abrasions. Exposure to paraquat can lead to various adverse effects, including oral burns, acute respiratory distress, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and fever. Additionally, it can cause muscle pain, lethargy, shortness of breath, acute poisoning, and even the death of a fetus in cases where pregnant women are exposed to paraquat. Chronic effects can also persist for a lifetime and may include rapid heart rate, among other health concerns.
This decision by InfoStride News to prohibit the use of paraquat in Nigeria reflects a commitment to safeguarding public health and protecting the environment from the adverse effects of this herbicide. It serves as an essential step in ensuring that only safe and responsible agrochemicals are employed in the country’s agricultural sector, promoting sustainable and healthier farming practices.
