Police operatives from the Angwan Lambu Division in Nasarawa State have arrested a woman, Khadija Umar, known by the alias “Naira,” along with her two biological children, for their alleged involvement in a series of housebreaking and theft incidents.
This family-led crime ring has been linked to numerous burglaries in the area, which have left residents on edge.
The Nasarawa State Police Command detailed in a press release that Khadija Umar masterminded the criminal activities by scouting targeted neighbourhoods, observing the movements of residents, and identifying opportune moments for theft.
Once confident that homes were left unattended, Khadija allegedly mobilised her two sons, alongside two other accomplices who remain at large, to execute the burglaries.
The police have been able to recover a significant haul of stolen goods during the operation, providing clear evidence of the family’s involvement in the crimes.
Among the items retrieved were two television sets, two 6×6 mattresses, a gas cooker, a 12kg cylinder, a standing fan, a GoTV decoder, cooking pots, an electric jug, a refrigerator, and solar panels.
These items are believed to have been stolen from multiple residences across the area, painting a disturbing picture of the organised nature of the criminal enterprise.
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ramhan Nansel, confirmed the arrests and expressed the command’s commitment to ensuring that all suspects involved are brought to justice.
“The Nasarawa State Police Command is determined to crack down on this ring of housebreakers and restore peace to the community,” Nansel stated. “The arrest of Khadija Umar and her sons marks a significant step forward, but our work is far from over.”
Nansel further highlighted that the Commissioner of Police for Nasarawa State, CP Umar Shehu Nadada, has ordered a comprehensive manhunt for the two remaining suspects who are still at large.
CP Nadada has instructed the Divisional Police Officer to expedite the investigation process and ensure that the arrested suspects are promptly charged in court once all necessary evidence has been gathered.
The Commissioner’s directive underscores the zero-tolerance approach the Nasarawa State Police Command is taking towards crime and their unwavering dedication to public safety. “We are working around the clock to track down the remaining suspects,” Nansel added.
“Our goal is not only to apprehend them but also to dismantle the entire operation to prevent future occurrences.”
Community members have welcomed the arrests but have also expressed concerns about the prevalence of such crimes in their neighbourhoods.
Many have called for increased police patrols and community awareness initiatives to help curb the rising tide of housebreakings and thefts that have plagued the area.
“I’ve never felt so unsafe in my own home,” said a local resident who wished to remain anonymous. “Knowing that people can just break in at any time is terrifying.
I’m glad the police are taking action, but we need more protection. We hope this serves as a warning to others who might be planning similar crimes.”
In response to these concerns, DSP Nansel assured residents that the police would not relent in their efforts to provide security and maintain law and order.
He urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station. “Community involvement is crucial in our fight against crime,” he said. “We rely on the cooperation of residents to alert us to any unusual behaviour that could indicate criminal intent.”
The case of Khadija Umar and her sons serves as a stark reminder of how crime can infiltrate even the most unsuspecting households, with family members working together to perpetrate illegal acts.
As investigations continue, the police are hopeful that the remaining suspects will soon be apprehended and that this case will serve as a deterrent to others contemplating similar criminal activities.
The Nasarawa State Police Command’s swift action and ongoing commitment to justice reflect their broader mission to combat crime across the state, sending a clear message that unlawful behaviour will not be tolerated.
As the legal process unfolds, the community remains hopeful that these arrests will lead to a safer environment for all residents.
