NDC Taraba Crisis Deepens as Legal Adviser Rejects Chairman’s Removal

The crisis rocking the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Taraba State has deepened following the rejection of the purported removal of the party’s state chairman, Mr. Ayuba P. Maikasuwa.

The party’s state legal adviser, Barrister Benjamin J. Ucha, reportedly faulted the process through which the chairman was removed, describing it as unconstitutional and contrary to the provisions of the party’s constitution.

Ucha maintained that the chairman remained in office, arguing that the purported removal did not follow the required procedure stipulated by the party.

The legal adviser said the state executive committee could not unilaterally remove the chairman without complying with the constitutional provisions governing the tenure and removal of elected party officers.

He therefore called on members of the party and supporters to disregard any announcement suggesting that Maikasuwa had been removed from office.

The development is the latest twist in the internal disagreement within the NDC in Taraba, with factions appearing to hold divergent positions over the leadership of the party in the state.

Ucha urged party members to remain calm and avoid actions capable of further escalating the crisis, stressing the need for all disputes to be resolved through lawful and constitutional channels.

He warned that any attempt to impose leadership outside the provisions of the party’s constitution could undermine the party’s unity and affect its preparations for the 2027 general elections.

The disagreement comes at a critical period for the NDC as political parties intensify mobilisation and begin positioning their structures across the country ahead of the 2027 elections.

The latest development could further complicate efforts to consolidate the party’s structure in Taraba unless the contending sides resolve their differences and establish a mutually accepted leadership arrangement.

The party’s ability to resolve the dispute through its internal mechanisms will be crucial to maintaining unity and ensuring an effective campaign structure ahead of the 2027 electoral contest.
