The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Rivers State has recently in Port Harcourt urged members of the public to be safety conscious to avoid fire outbreak.
The NEMA Zonal Coordinator for South-South, Emenike Umesi made this call in an interview with newsmen in his office, stressing that members of the public should be careful with elements that could cause fire outbreak such as electrical appliances and petroleum products.
He further said that elements such as electrical appliances and petroleum products should be handled with care to reduce the rate of fire outbreak. Adding, members of the public should always unplug all their electrical appliances from switch boards after use, especially in offices and shops at the close of the day’s work and business.
Emenike Umesi averred that the Shell Petroleum Development Company, Total Nigeria Plc and Agip have good fire fighting trucks and should help the State Government whenever there is a case of fire outbreak in the State. He also called on people who engage in the building of houses and estates in the State to create access roads to their buildings to make movement easy for trucks in case of any fire outbreak or other emergencies.
The Zonal Cordinator urged the public to listen to its sensitization programmes on fire outbreak, flood and other disasters as well as preventive measures and be assured that NEMA would not relent in its awareness campaign aimed at reducing loss of lives and property.
