Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, the newly sworn-in President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has pledged that the association, under his leadership, will actively hold both federal and state governments accountable for their obligations to the Nigerian people.
Osigwe made these commitments during his inaugural address titled “Our Mandate,” delivered in Lagos on Thursday, where he outlined a comprehensive agenda aimed at strengthening the role of the legal profession in promoting justice, equity, and good governance.
Osigwe, who is the 32nd president of the NBA, emphasised the unique position that legal practitioners hold in society, describing it as a powerful platform to drive positive change.

“As legal practitioners, we occupy a unique position in society, one that enables us to effect positive changes and uphold the principles of justice, equity, and fairness.
We must ensure that the law serves all Nigerians, irrespective of their background, status, or affiliation,” Osigwe stated, setting the tone for his tenure.
A key focus of Osigwe’s leadership will be holding governments at all levels accountable, particularly the federal and state administrations. He expressed a strong commitment to ensuring that government policies and programmes align with the needs and aspirations of the people, emphasising the importance of transparency, good governance, and the reduction of excessive governmental expenditure.
Osigwe noted that the NBA would actively engage with government bodies to ensure that the welfare of the populace remains a top priority.
“We will work towards ensuring that government policies and programmes meet the yearnings and aspirations of our people, particularly in areas related to good governance, transparency in financial expenditures, and reducing the cost of governance. It is crucial that the welfare of our people is given the highest priority,” Osigwe asserted.
He also highlighted the NBA’s role in advocating for the government to adequately address critical issues such as security, respect for fundamental human rights, and the provision of basic amenities including food, shelter, clothing, education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
Osigwe’s agenda extends to addressing the pervasive issues of security and access to justice in Nigeria.
He stressed that the NBA would push for effective responses to the challenges of securing lives and property and ensuring respect for the fundamental rights and freedoms of all citizens.
“We will strive to ensure that the government responds appropriately to the challenges of security of lives and properties, respect for fundamental rights and freedoms, the provision of gainful employment, and all the basic amenities of life,” he stated.
Additionally, Osigwe reiterated the NBA’s commitment to being a vocal advocate on matters affecting the legal profession and the administration of justice.
He promised that the association would engage constructively with various levels of government and other stakeholders, presenting proposals and blueprints to address emerging issues.
This approach, he believes, will foster an environment where the rule of law thrives and where the legal profession can contribute meaningfully to national development.
“We shall be vocal and consistently speak up on issues affecting the legal profession and the administration of justice,” Osigwe affirmed.
He stressed that the NBA would not shy away from its responsibilities to the legal community and the broader society, and would actively participate in dialogues that seek to improve the administration of justice and uphold the rule of law.
Osigwe’s vision for the NBA also includes enhancing the welfare and professional development of its members.
He acknowledged the significant responsibilities that come with his new role but expressed optimism that, with the support and cooperation of NBA members, the challenges ahead could be transformed into opportunities for growth and progress.
“As we take on the mantle of leadership, we are well aware of the enormous responsibilities that lie ahead. However, we are optimistic.
We know that with your support and cooperation, we will meet the challenges head-on and transform them into opportunities for the growth and progress of our members,” he concluded.
The inauguration of Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, marks a new chapter for the Nigerian Bar Association, with a clear mandate to not only advocate for the legal profession but also to serve as a watchdog ensuring that government actions align with the principles of justice, equity, and accountability.
His leadership promises a proactive NBA that is engaged, responsive, and committed to the betterment of Nigeria’s legal landscape and the broader society.
