Nigeria’s president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has said that the country’s economic reforms would be best served by avoiding a war with the Niger Republic.
This was announced on Saturday by Presidential Media Adviser Aguri Ngelale after a meeting between Tinubu and US Presidential Envoy and Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Ambassador Molly Phee.
Tinubu urged the United States to work with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to strengthen democracy in the region.

He said ECOWAS was still open to ideas for re-establishing democracy in Niger’s republic.
Diplomatic efforts to find a diplomatic solution to the conflict in Niger are well underway. ECOWAS has said it is willing to explore all alternatives, but I am keeping it at bay until all other corrective procedures have been tried. Neither I nor the region would benefit from a war, but protecting our democracy must come first. He added, “We will not allow anyone to buy time dishonestly; that is the consensus of ECOWAS.”
On July 26th, a military junta cut short democracy in Niger.
